Smoke Detector

Smoke detectors are devices designed to provide a timely warning of the development of a fire or other hazards. Various studies concluded that the placement of sufficient smoke detectors in homes, offices and other workplaces can dramatically reduce the number of deaths.

The warning messages from a smoke detector quickly make you aware of possible danger, so that you can take appropriate action, such as firefighting or evacuation..

Smoke detectors mainly work in two ways: optical or thermal. With optical smoke detectors, a light beam is emitted from the smoke detector. When the light is interrupted by smoke, the alarm goes off to warn of a possible fire. With thermal smoke detectors, an alarm is triggered when the ambient temperature exceeds a preset temperature. There are other types of smoke detectors, but these are the most common.

An important difference among smoke detectors is the energy source that they use. Smoke detectors can be connected to the electricity grid or run on batteries. With current developments, it is possible to link smoke detectors to control rooms and the emergency services can be notified automatically. Owners of the building can be informed as quickly as possible about a possible risk. There are also smoke detectors that are connected to the electricity grid and also have an emergency battery.

Checking the proper functioning, including the batteries, is a very important aspect that is specified by law. When purchasing smoke detectors you must check the quality and pay attention to the following:
- the smoke detector must comply with the NBN EN 14604 standard and have a CE marking
- the smoke detector must have a sharp sound signal
- it is important to have the smoke detector tested annually after installation

Smoke detectors are mandatory, but the legislation differs per region in Belgium.
- Flemish Region: smoke detectors are mandatory in rental properties, student flats, new-build homes and renovated homes
- Walloon Region: smoke detectors are mandatory in all properties
- Brussels-Capital Region: smoke detectors are only required in homes that are rented out

After the purchase of smoke detectors, placement is crucial. In all buildings, there must be smoke detectors on every floor and in every corridor. In houses and apartments, it is best to place the smoke detectors in the bedrooms, the living room and the office. Avoid smoke detectors in places where fumes and exhaust gases can cause a false alarm, such as the kitchen, bathroom or garage.
